The window is too narrow
Koma needs 50 columns. A phone in portrait, or a window dragged too thin, is not enough, and koma will not try to draw a broken chat.
If the window is under 50 columns, koma hides the chat and asks you to resize. q, Esc, or Ctrl+C leaves. Widen the window and the chat comes back.
